Why Are Testosterone Levels Dropping
“Men’s average sperm counts are down globally, and testosterone levels have plunged, while erectile dysfunction, is, cruelly, on the rise.”
Reclaim Your Manhood. Declare war against soy. Man up….
These common phrases used jokingly on social media have real meaning behind them. This comedic relief is, in part, a cope against the fact that masculinity is in decline. We see it every day with soft-chinned journalists that are traumatized from firing an AR-15. (Children in rural America shoot these rifles for sport) We see it when weak men hide among women, pretending to be a woman’s rights activist or a feminist. These men are just trying to get laid. We see it when men opt out of the dating scene for a life of gaming, porn and solitude.
According to a recent New York Post article, men really do need to reclaim their manhood.
• Sperm counts have dropped 50 percent since the 1970s
• Erectile dysfunction is increasing
• Testosterone levels are declining by 1 percent each year.
“Many of us simply eat too many things that are not good for us, move too little, drink too much alcohol.” – Dr. Shanna Swan, Fertility Scientist
These are all the common pitfalls that men fall into. They believe they’re young and immortal but their health, sex drive and testosterone say otherwise. This is something I seek to fix with the advice in my book, Reclaim Your Manhood.
Dr. Swan sounded the alarm in 2017 with a meta-analysis of 40,000 men showing sperm count fell 59 percent between 1973 and 2011.
It’s not just the men. Rates of miscarriages are on the rise. Girls are experiencing earlier and earlier puberties. Dr. Swan notes that “In some parts of the world, the average twenty-something woman today is less fertile than her grandmother at 35.” But as this is Path To Manliness, we are going to focus on what we, as men, can do about this issue.
“If women want to have a baby, they are often told, ‘Clean up your act, but it’s probably more important for men to do so,” says Dr. Swan.
The Testosterone Crisis
A 2006 study showed that a 65-year-old man in 2002 would have testosterone levels that are 15 percent lower than a 65-year-old man in 1987. A 2020 Urology Times Journal articles says the same thing is occurring in young adults and adolescents.
So How Can You Increase Your Testosterone?
HIT THE GYM! – You probably get tired of hearing this, but there’s a reason it’s brought up so much. The benefits of lifting weights are immense. If you want higher testosterone, lift weights. Worship at the house of iron!
FIX YOUR DIET – Yes, your diet has a huge impact on your testosterone levels. Overeating or constantly dieting can wreck your Testosterone levels. You need to consume enough protein, especially if you’re lifting weights. You also need to be eating enough carbohydrates and fats. You need a balanced diet of natural foods. Stay away from processed foods, sugar and beer.
GET SUNLIGHT – A 12-month study has shown Vitamin D3 can increase testosterone levels by about 25%. About half the US population is deficient in Vitamin D. Especially you northern folks. If you can’t get enough sun, take a Vitamin D supplement.
AVOID ESTROGENIC CHEMICALS – Minimize your exposure to BPA, and other estrogenic chemicals found in plastic. Get a metal water bottle to carry around. Stop storing your leftovers or meal preps in plastic Tupperware. Get glass Tupperware.
LIVE A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE – Make sure you’re getting enough sleep, minimizing your stress and eating healthy. Even laughter, happiness and success can help boost your health and testosterone levels.
“A massive sexual slump is underway, due to declines in people’s sex drives and interest in sexual activity.”
“Swan points to the plastics and chemicals in our immediate environments, compounds that disrupt the hormonal systems of both men and women and make it harder to reproduce. One example She cites, for example, phthalates — near ubiquitous chemicals that make plastic more flexible and cosmetics and beauty products better able to absorb scent. These chemicals have been linked to the decreased production of hormones, like testosterone, and “male reproductive outcomes,” according to a 2018 review of research.”
The article continues to note that chemicals found in fast-food packaging, paper plates and stain-resistant carpeting have been linked to reductions in semen quality, testicular volume and even penis length. Do I have your attention now?
What if you don’t plan on having kids/having more kids?
A Stanford University study shows that infertile men die younger than fertile men. Low sperm counts even link to higher rates of diabetes, heart disease and cancers. And trust me on this one. If you’re a young man, you’ll likely change your mind on having kids as you get older.
What can you do to increase Sperm Counts?
Quit smoking
Cut down on alcohol
Lose the excess weight
Quit binging on TV
Lower your stress
“Men who’ve experienced two or more recent stressful life events — such as the death or serious illness of a close relative, divorce or serious relationship problems, moving, or a job change — were more likely to have below-normal sperm concentration,”
The NY Post article notes that heavy drinking (25 units per week) lowers sperm counts. But those who drink 7 drinks a week have higher sperm counts than those who stay completely sober.
Fix your diet and fix your sperm count. I often advocate eating a (mostly) paleo diet. As in, the food that cavemen would eat. Stay away from processed foods like seed oils or nearly anything in the aisles of a grocery store. Eat meats, good fats, fruits, veggies and water. Juice is basically uncarbonated soda. Milk is for fattening up baby cows. The only drinks I advocate are water and whiskey.
“These unfortunate effects might be due to the large amounts of estrogens in dairy products or to the presence of environmental contaminants such as pesticides and chlorinated pollutants in these products,” Swan writes.
In addition, men who eat a lot of processed meats (hot dogs, bacon, sausage, salami) tend to have lower sperm counts and a lower percentage of normally shaped sperm. The theory is that “the curing of meat produces chemicals . . . that can cause cancer and also damage DNA, including DNA in sperm,” writes Swan.
Your friends in your life are average and they’ll tell you that it’s normal for testosterone levels to drop as you age. Do not listen to them. They are dragging you down to their level. Increase your testosterone. Reclaim Your Manhood! And get a better group of friends.

Why We Run
We don't run to lose weight. We don’t run just to work out. Sure, those are benefits, but they’re not the reasons we lace up our shoes and hit the pavement or the trail day after day. Running transcends fitness goals and calorie counts. It’s not about shaving seconds off your mile time or staying in shape—though we all want those things, too. Running is about something deeper, something that goes beyond the physical.
