I Created a Running Group and This is How It Changed My Life
I’ve spent the last two weeks running with a group of local runners and it’s been the greatest sense of community I’ve experienced since High School Football.
If you’re a runner, you know how hard it is to connect with people. Most people hate running. Like HATE it!!! So when you finally find a group of people who are committed to running, you feel a great sense of connection and even camaraderie.
Where most people will say the cliches of “I’m not a runner” or “I only run when something is chasing me!” this group is giving out tips on breathing better on your run and sharing their favorite running routes. This is like a Fight Club for runners.
It all started when the local running store hosted a group run followed by beers at the local taphouse.
We ran 2 miles around the block and I immediately tried (unsuccessfully) to chase down the lead runner. Turns out she used to run track for the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns. But despite that, she was impressed because she usually doesn’t hear footsteps behind her. A couple of other guys who ran neck and neck with me finished at about the same time as me. Turns out they are kayaking river guides. Cool people.
After the run, the four of us sat down at the “winners table” as I declared it. We began to complain that there was no runners group in our town, and immediately realized that we are the runners group. We just never ran into each other before that day.
We set up a group chat and now whenever someone goes for a run, they put out an invite in the group chat. We also meet up at the same time and place once a week. I’ve never formed a bond with people so quickly.
What’s great about having a group like this, is you get accountability. It’s easy to say you don’t feel like running. It’s easy to skip a couple days and get out of the habit. But when you see everyone else is still running without you, it’s natural to feel left out. And it makes you want to get out there and hit the pavement.
Not only am I running more consistently. I’m running faster. Two runs in a row with this group, I hit a personal record for my 2 mile time. I’m now consistently running miles in the 7:00s. Not bad for a guy who can bench 300.
This is the power of surrounding yourself with highly motivated people! They lift you up. They inspire you. They motivate you to be better!
You have your friends hitting you up to grab beers. My friends are inviting me to go running and planning trips to Spartan Races.
This is how you level up!
This group has changed my life. It’s tough to go it alone. And finding friends is always hard to do. But finding good friends who are highly motivated and enjoy pushing their body to the limits is 10x harder! So when you find these people, they are something special.
Today there are 6 of us in the group and each of us have been searching for more runners to join our group.
Creating a local running group is a game-changer. This is a powerful shift in your world. This will change people’s lives.
If you do this, you will motivate people. You will inspire people. You will help make people healthier!
We all want the world to be a better place. And if you’re reading on my website, then you want to make people faster, stronger and healthier. This is a very real and actionable way for you to change lives. My challenge to you today is to go out and find the local runners. Even if it’s just 2 people. Big things have humble beginnings.
How do you do this? Glad you asked!
Go to local races. Talk to people. When you hit it off with them, mention you’re starting a running group. The hardest part is getting the first couple people. After that, you’ll find the group will grow more quickly.
From then, you can create a Facebook group. You can connect with local running stores or bars and see if they’ll help you promote. This can help bring in business so they should be supportive.
Let me know if you’ve done this successfully. Share your running stories in the comments below!

Why We Run
We don't run to lose weight. We don’t run just to work out. Sure, those are benefits, but they’re not the reasons we lace up our shoes and hit the pavement or the trail day after day. Running transcends fitness goals and calorie counts. It’s not about shaving seconds off your mile time or staying in shape—though we all want those things, too. Running is about something deeper, something that goes beyond the physical.
